Google launches new Add-Ons for Docs & Spreadsheets

We regularly use Google Docs & Spreadsheets to create notes or write articles or even create lists and often rely on external tools.

To make our work easier, Google tied up with developer partners to develop add-ons -tools that give you more features in your documents and spreadsheets. A few of them include Merge from MailChimp, EasyBib from Imagine easy, Workflows and many more..

Check out the video below which gives the step by step process of how to use add-ons.

To browse through Add-ons, you need click on Add-ons, then select Get Add-ons and then it open a window with list of apps currently available. All you need to do is, to install any app and it will automatically appear across all docs and sheets.

With Merge you can send customized emails from Google Docs. You can use merge tags to pull info from spreadsheet into document [see image]. Once data is merged, hit send and your custom emails will be delivered.

Wondered why images never displayed on Gmail or you had to add senders to safe list before allowing images to display, that was security features by Gmail.

Gmail now allows images to be displayed in your messages across desktop, laptop, iOS and Android. Earlier images would be loaded from external servers, now Gmail hosts images on its own proxy servers.

Which means your images are safe and secure and are checked for viruses and malware and you don’t need to press “display images below” link. With this, your email is safer, faster and more beautiful.

Those who prefer to authorize image display on a per message basis can choose the option “Ask before displaying external images” under the General tab in Settings. Option will also be default for users who previously selected “Ask before displaying external content”

The new improvement will be rolled out today for desktop and for Gmail mobile apps in early 2014.

  1. Hangouts app now supports location sharing and SMS features. This way you can send a map of your current location (see image 1), and you can send and receive SMS (see image 2). Animated GIFs also play inline.
  2. Broadcasters can now schedule Hangouts On Air, then promote them with a dedicated watch page. Once you’re live, Control Room lets you moderate the conversation with eject and remote mute.
  3. The video call experience is significantly improved. It’s now full screen across mobile and desktop, and it fixes and enhances webcam lighting automatically.

Good news Indian fans, the Nexus 5 shows up on Google Play Store India with 16 GB model priced at Rs. 28,999 and 32GB priced at Rs. 32,999.

It comes pre-installed with top kid’s apps and also Kid’s store aimed at driving the educational possibilities of technology for kids. Preloaded content includes educational, games, entertainment and e-book apps.It also gives parents a chance to select apps for kids via the Application Manager.

It also includes Time Management tool that lets parents set the specific time for use. After a time period is over, a password lock screen appears, requiring a password to unlock the device. This tool helps parents to ensure the time spent by their children on tablet is balanced.

Google Chrome App Scratchpad replaced by Google Keep

Google has made it official, it’s replacing the Scratchpad app for Chrome with Google Keep. This one is a no-brainer, as both apps do the same thing and Keep is obviously the more expansive service.

Keep is cross-platform, it works on the web, so in Chrome, but there are also mobile apps for it.If you are a Scratchpad user, you have to enable Google Docs sync and all of your lists will be transferred to Keep. .

Google hasn’t been working on Scratchpad for a few months now and will soon retire it. Users are being notified of the impending closure, but for the time being you can still download, install, and use Scratchpad from the Web Store.

How many of you have used Scratchpad, other alternatives is using Google Drive which allows you to create doc files and save them, which can be easily accessed anywhere.
